Growing sufficient quantities of food to meet rising protein demand, while managing environmental impacts, is a critical issue. Seafood is an important protein source, and over the past 30 years, as catches from fisheries have stagnated, farmed seafood, known as aquaculture, has increased rapidly to meet demand. We are working with SB Mariculture, an offshore mussel farm, and the Sustainable Aquaculture Research Center to determine the economic feasibility of growing native seaweed in the Santa Barbara Channel.
